DI MATTEO OUT

Di Matteo was sacked in the early hours of this morning in his office at the club’s training ground at Cobham. Club chairman Bruce Buck and chief executive Ron Gourlay told Di Matteo of Roman Abramovic’s decision to fire him at around 4am, after the squad had returned from Turin. If the club follows recent precedent it will continue to pay Di Matteo for the remaining months of his contract rather than offer a single lump sum. Di Matteo signed a two-year deal with a break clause after the first season in July. The club board is in talks and Di Matteo’s replacement is expected to be announced in the next 24 hours, possibly as soon as this afternoon. Pep Guardiola remains the No 1 target for Abramovic, but Avram Grant and Rafael Benitez are potential caretaker options.
